Settld has one simple goal: use technology to remove all unnecessary admin around death, giving people back the time and space to focus on what matters most. We started by automating the process of notifying multiple companies when someone dies, and then transparently resolving each account request with live status tracking. The result is that we interface with over 800 organisations to turn 10 hours of headache into a 15 minute stress free task for our users, landing us a net promoter score of 97.
Settld is a TechStars 2021 company, a Barclays Bank ‘Eagle Labs’ company, supported by the UK Law Society, and a TechNation ‘Rising Star’. We were nominated by the Lisbon Web Summit as a ‘ones to watch’ Breakout Startup, have already won 3 business awards, and are regularly featured in national TV, radio and press for our ‘tech for good’ solution. All this is made possible because of our brilliant team: we’re a friendly group of product, marketing, engineering, operations and finance minds, with international experience built across Tech, VC, Media and Startup. What brings us together is the desire to use our brain power to help others. Settld has raised ~$1M to date, and is now gearing up for the next funding round.
What is the role?
Settld is built with cutting edge technologies such as Elixir, running on AWS. The mission of the Head of Technology is to help Settld scale its automation and machine learning to the next level. Settld wants to be the first business to solve ‘death admin’ problems at a global scale, so whoever we take on should be excited by the idea of leading a technical team to make big things happen. Our ideal candidate has led and delivered at least 1 tech project before (ideally within a startup environment), keeps a keen eye on Security, and has successfully grown a team. This is a high profile and entrepreneurial role, offering a great opportunity to make a tangible difference to the lives of others. Working in an early stage startup environment, expect to have autonomy and ownership over all our key technology decisions.
As a Head of Technology, working alongside the CEO, you will:
- Shape, articulate and oversee all aspects of Engineering, including technical vision, technology blueprint, information security and best practices & technology stacks;
- Make architecture decisions to ensure a strong, secure, and scalable product (guiding the existing MVP to achieve product market fit and scale). NB, most of the current system is written in Elixir, but we're open to using other technologies if they're right for the job;
- Constantly evaluate technological advancements and innovative solutions to drive continuous product improvement;
- Understand and identify risks when integrating with potential partner and service provider infrastructure and APIs;
- Build a strong and attractive engineering culture while working with a flexible, agile and iterative approach;
- Recruit, lead and retain a team of high-performing software developers;
- Roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty in the codebase alongside our 2 inhouse engineers.
- Own the current development process and continue to shape the dev culture (code reviews, pairing, daily standups, continuous integration/deployment etc).
You’re likely to be someone who:
- Loves problem solving and is interested in solving social impact issues.
- Thrives in uncertainty and likes startup culture.
- Has a proven track record of taking ideas and bringing them to life.
- Has knowledge of a range of current product development frameworks. We use Elixir + Phoenix LiveView , ReactJS for frontend and AWS Lambda
- Has worked on a diverse set of full stack technologies including experience with web, mobile, databases (Postgres) and infrastructure.
- Has a high degree of user empathy and actively seeks to test, learn and iterate based on user feedback.
- Is well-connected to the developer community and able to attract the right engineering team.
- Has an appetite for driving innovation and creativity. Looks for existing solutions to problems to speed up delivery.
- (The ‘cherry on top’ but not essential) Has experience in building B2B SaaS platforms.
